Shri T.R.Rajamani is one of the
most respected and critically acclaimed mridangists in the field of carnatic
music today. He underwent training under his father, the illustrious, Palghat
Mani Iyer. He has accompanied top notch
musicians of yester years such as G.N. Balasubramaniam, M.L. Vasanthakumari and
Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar to name a few. He has also accompanied Lalgudi
Jayaraman, K.V. Narayanaswamy and a host of other contemporary musicians.
He has performed in most of the
major sabhas in India such as the Music Academy and Krishna Gana Sabha in
Madras, Shanmukhananda Sabha and Bharatiya Music Sabha in Bombay, Rasika
Ranjani Sabha - Culcutta and the Gayana Samaj in Bangalore. Since 1981, The
Travancore Royal family have invited him to participate in the Navarathri
Mandapam festival held annually at Trivandrum.
He is an `A'
grade artist on All India Radio since 1963 and has participated in the National
Program of Music, Sangeet Sammelan and specially organized programs before invited
audience.
Internationally, He performed at
the India Music Festival held in Edinburgh, and also performed in Glasgow and
London. He has performed at the California Institute of Arts, Valencia and also
performed in Los Angeles and over the L.A. Radio. Recently, On a visit to
Singapore, He gave a series of lecture-demonstrations under the auspices of
Kalamandir.
He is a gifted teacher and has
over thirty years of experience training students both in India and the USA He
has tutored over 100 students and some of them are professional mridangists
themselves. In 1975, He served as faculty in the music dept. of California
Institute of Arts. At present he has 20 students under his tutelage including a
scholar sponsored by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, a Govt. Of India
undertaking. He has also been selected for fellowship by the Indian Council for
Cultural Relations, (Government of India, New Delhi) for doing a project on the
role of percussion instruments in a Carnatic Concert.
He has a Bachelors Degree in
Mechanical Engineering and retired as senior scientist at Central
Electrochemical Research Institute (Govt. of India), Kalamassery, Kerala.
