Veteran
violinist, Chalakudy N S Narayanaswamy passed away on 24th February
2003 at Kerala.
Born on
September 18th, 1925 at Chalakudy, he received his training on the
violin under his uncle NK Akhileshwara Bhagavatar and later he came
under the influence of Semmangudi R Srinivasa Iyer, during the
latter's tenure in Sri Swati Tirunal College of Music,
Tiruvanantapuram as well as Papa Venkataramaiah school of music.
Sri
Narayanaswami was a Professor of Music at Sri Swati Tirunal College
of Music , and Staff Artiste of the AIR at Tiruvanantapuram from 1946
to 56. Following Semmangudi's retirement from Sri Swati Tirunal
College of Music, Chalukudy Narayanaswamy became the Principal of the
Sri Swati Tirunal College of Music at Tiruvanantapuram for a number
of years. He was a member of the Board of Studies and Examiner for
Music Exams at various prestious Universities such as Banaras Hindu
University, Venkateshwara University, Tirupathi, University of Mysore
and Kerala.
He received
the Kerala Sangita Nataka Akademi award in 1977 and was also honoured
as best Senior Violin Vidwan by the Music Academy, Madras in 1979. He
also received the Central Sangita Nataka Academy award in 1988.
Sri
Narayanaswami was a top ranking violinist in Kerala and he was also a
preferred accompanist for most of Carnatic Music's senior vidwans and
contemporaries such as Semmangudi, Chembai, Vasudevachar, Madura
Mani, Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Prof. Mysore V. Ramarathnam and so
on...Narayanaswami's accompanyment on the violin always was always
one of high calibre, very peaceful, with minimal use of
paraphernelia. He always played a significant role in taking a
concerts to new heights, with is vibrant accompanyment.
SIFA had
the great honor of bringing Chalukudi Narayanaswamy to bay area in
1981 to accompany T.V. Shankaranarayanan along with Vidwan T.K.
Murthy on the mridangam.
