B. Balasubrahmaniyan, is an emerging master of Karnatak vocal music. He began vocal music lessons with his father, D. Balraj, and subsequently studied under several teachers including Smt. T. Brinda and T. Viswanathan, with whom he worked during Viswa’s frequent visits to India in the 1990s. Balu collected numerous first-place prizes for vocal music performance from various music organizations in Chennai, including the “Tamil Isaipannar” award from the Tamil Isai Mandram society in 1997, the “Yuvakala Bharathi” award from the Bharat Kalachar cultural center in 2000 and Nada Oli from Raga Sudha a cultural organization in Chennai. He is a regular performer on All India Radio and Doordarshan television (Chennai), and in 2002 and 2003 he was invited to perform solo concerts at the St. Thyagaraja Aradhana international South Indian music festival held in Cleveland, Ohio. Balu is also a scholar and teacher of considerable range. His University of Madras Masters’ Thesis was entitled “Teaching Karnatak Music to School Children,” while his Ph.D. thesis focuses on a century (1850-1950) of music literature in the Tamil language. He spent a month at the International Centre for Performing Arts in Durban, South Africa, to give concerts and was an Examiner for South Indian Music. Currently Balu teaches at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, where he is Adjunct Instructor of South Indian Music.
