A leading carnatic vocalist with 31 years of professional experience,
Charumathi Ramachandran is noted for her adherence to tradition,
creativity and innovation. As the senior most disciple of Sangeetha
Kalanidhi Dr. M.L. Vasanthakumari, Charumathi is the proud heir to her
guru's artistry and musical virtuosity. That virtuosity has been embellished by further musical training from Sri D.K. Jayaraman and Sri Ramnad Krishnan. She is endowed with a mellifluous voice which can easily traverse the octaves, while producing thrilling birkas and also while rendering classical gamakas. She has an impressive repertoire of kritis, varnams, padams and javalis. Her laya artistry and grip over kaala pramaana are seen in her neraval, swaram and pallavi singing. She has successfully introduced the Hindustani form of "Tarana" in her concerts.
Charumathi has composed pallavis in rare talas and popularized them. She has set to tune many songs; most notable of these is "Om Namo Narayana," a lyric of Ambujam Krishna set to karnaranjani ragam. She has been a music director and orchestral conductor for music based operas. She is also a dedicated and uncompromising teacher, and several of her disciples are gaining popularity and poised to become popular artists of the next generation. She has traveled widely and performed in USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia.
